Decide To Ride - A Message From Our General Sales Manager

Safe Ride Together
12/14/21
To all of our Communities,

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With family gatherings, gift swaps and midnight toasts quickly approaching this holiday season, Anheuser-Busch and Dana Distributors are more thankful than ever to be a part of your festivities. Whether you’re raising a glass at a loved one’s house or celebrating with a night on the town, remember to keep yourself and your community safe.
If you’ll be spreading holiday cheer with an ice-cold beer or two, don’t forget to plan ahead for a safe ride. There is an average of 300,000 daily incidents and 10,000 annual fatalities related to alcohol-impaired driving in the U.S. – and this problem is 100% preventable.

That’s why we’ve joined forces with Anheuser-Busch, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Uber in a first-of-its-kind industry coalition that is focused on ending drunk driving. In a new initiative called Decide To Ride, we are encouraging everyone to plan ahead for a safe ride home, before the celebrations even begin – because you can’t drive drunk if you don’t drive there.

For over 35 years, Anheuser-Busch and its wholesaler partners have invested more than $1 billion in responsible drinking initiatives and community-based programs to prevent underage drinking, impaired driving and other harmful uses of alcohol. At Dana Distributors we’re proud to work alongside Anheuser-Busch to ensure that we keep our friends, families and neighbors safe by planning ahead for a safe ride home and encouraging those in Orange , Rockland and Sullivan County to do their part.
Cheers to a safe, happy and healthy holiday season!

Sincerely,
Tom Kennedy
General Sales manager
Dana Distributors

Too drunk to drive on New Year’s Eve? Alert Cab to the rescue

GOSHEN — Nobody wants to start the new year with a driving-while-intoxicated charge.

So, if you have too much to drink on New Year’s Eve, don’t get behind the wheel and drive. There’s a program that will get you home safely, and it’s free.

Alert Cab is a joint effort by Dana Distributors, one of the largest distributors of alcoholic beverages in the region, local police and about 700 participating bars, restaurants and taverns in Orange, Rockland and Sullivan counties. Started on New Year’s Eve in 1986 to save lives, it has now expanded to other key dates: Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving eve.

This year, Dana has put more money into the effort, General Sales Manager Tom Kennedy told law enforcement and elected officials who gathered at its offices on Hatfield Lane on Friday to announce this year’s program for New Year’s Eve.

“This week is the most dangerous time in the year to be on the road,” said Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler. “Offering a ride for free, can’t say enough about it ... Enjoy responsibly, celebrate safely and let’s get through the season.”

In Orange County, police made 1,387 DWI arrests in 2017, according to Hoovler, and another 1,068 for the first three quarters of 2018. The days between Christmas and New Year’s Day can be especially dangerous.

To crack down on drinking and driving, state police will increase patrols as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs through Jan. 1. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and more troopers on roads during the campaign.

“It’s a deterrent,” said state police Troop F spokesman Trooper Steven Nevel. “It forces people to have a plan in place before they go out — to have a designated driver, to call a cab ... Who wants to start the New Year with a DWI or killing someone?”

Last year, Troop F arrested 32 people for DWIs on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

If party-goers feel they’re too intoxicated to drive, they can hand over their keys and call a cab. Dana will pick up the tab for a ride to the individual’s home within a 10-mile radius. The offer is available between 4 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 2 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Since 2009, Dana has paid for 1,357 rides under the Alert Cab program.

BEER DISTRIBUTOR OFFERING SAFE RIDES ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

Dana Distributors, a beer distributor based in Goshen is offering a safe alternative to drunken driving on New Year's Eve. The distributor of many beverages throughout Orange, Sullivan and Rockland counties, most notably Budweiser products, was joined by Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus, District Attorney David Hoovler and Sheriff Carl E. DuBois on Friday to show support for Dana Distributors’ Alert Cab initiative. Senator Bill Larkin, State Assemblyman Karl Brabenec, Commissioner of Emergency Services Brendan Casey and law enforcement personnel from the State Police and local municipalities also attended the news conference. Town of Chester Police Chief Dan Doellinger was presented with Dana Distributors’ 2018 Recognition Award at the event.

The Recognition Award is given each year to a leader in the community who helps bring attention to alcohol awareness and creates strong partnerships with local officials and law enforcement. Neuhaus earned the honor from Dana Distributors last year.

“You can certainly celebrate on New Year’s Eve, but be responsible and don’t drink and drive,” Neuhaus said. “Poor decisions can land you in jail, the hospital or worse. Orange County has zero tolerance for drunk driving and law enforcement will remain vigilant during this holiday, ensuring that our roadways are safe. We appreciate that Dana Distributors offers the Alert Cab program. Every ride can potentially save lives.”

For the 14th consecutive year, Dana Distributors is offering cab rides free of charge to residents in Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan counties as part of the Alert Cab program. Rides are available from 4:00 p.m. December 31 to 2:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Destinations must be within a 10-mile radius of pickup, and one must have driven his/her car to the location at which pick up is requested.

Participating bars and restaurants will have signs to let patrons know the program is available. The program aims to improve road safety and prevent drunk driving over the New Year’s holiday.

“Alert Cab is an important program that has been successful for more than a decade,” Hoovler said. “I want to thank Fred Dana and Dana Distributors for continuing Alert Cab each year. Our message is simple: Don’t become or cause another statistic attributed to driving while intoxicated. There is never an excuse to drink and drive.”

Added DuBois: “If you’ve have had too much to drink, don’t take a chance. Do not get in that car. Do not allow anyone else to get in that car if they have had too much to drink. The hardline you will hear from law enforcement will be, 'drive sober or get pulled over.'”

The Alert Cab service is paid for by Dana Distributors and provided by 19 cab companies, including eight in Orange County. For more information about the Alert Cab program, contact Tom Kennedy at Dana Distributors at 615-3236.

Dana Distributors & Burke Catholic High School Presents 'I’m living proof of what happens to people who make poor choices'

AR-181039993-_20181031-115405_1

Original Article Via The Chronicle

 — Sarah Panzau Evans, a motivational speaker who survived a drunk driving accident that changed her body and her life, spoke to a crowd of 400 students in the John S. Burke Catholic High School gymnasium on Oct. 25.

Her future was bright until one life-altering day. She was an award-winning collegiate athlete with a full scholarship to play for the Southwestern Illinois College volleyball team. She won conference Freshman of the Year honors, was named to seven all-tournament teams, and was a two-time member of the National Junior College Athletic Association woman's volleyball All-American team. But, on Aug. 23, 2003, everything changed.

She was 21 years old the day she left a party and made the irrevocable decision to get into her car and drive home. With a blood-alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit, Evans totaled her car. The accident left her with a severed arm, all but five damaged vertebra, and a jaw broken in seven places. She was given a zero percent chance of surviving her injuries. Evans spent two and half months in a hospital and has undergone more than 30 surgeries since the accident.

Evans is using her second chance at life to educate others on the dangers of drunk driving.

“If these kids want to make that one poor choice of drinking underage, I plead with them not to make the second poor choice to get behind the wheel,” she said. “I think just by looking at me and hearing my story, they will know that I’m living proof of what happens to people who make poor choices.”

Burke Catholic students were moved by Evan’s story.

“This was, by far, the best assembly I’ve ever attended,” said Holden Lee, a junior. “Her story was sad, but ultimately, it was very inspirational because she is leading a successful life and has overcome the tragedy of her drunk driving accident.”

Evans shared photos of the wreckage, and the guilt she still carries to this day, especially for the pain and fear she caused her family. On the night of her accident, Evans' mother was visited by two police officers who asked her to identify a young woman involved in a fatal accident.

“The students found Sarah’s story very impactful because she is young and was an athlete and spoke to them in an honest, direct way,” said John Douthit, Burke Catholic Principal of Operations. “It’s so important that we provide our students with assemblies like this one because it’s critical for them to understand that one bad choice can have grave consequences.”

Burke Catholic High School partnered with Dana Distributors partnered to present the program.

Too much boozing? Alert Cab program provides free rides By Richard J. Bayne

ALERT CAB CONFERENCE 2017

Original Article via The Times Herald Record | Richard J. Bayne

"GOSHEN — If you’re out partying on New Year’s Eve, and you’ve had too much to drink, there’s a program that will get you home safely, and it’s free. Alert Cab is a joint effort involving Goshen beer distributor Dana Distributors, local law-enforcement agencies and about 600 bars, restaurants and taverns.

If you feel like you’re too intoxicated to drive, just give your bartender the keys. Dana will pay for the cab ride. Participants can get rides, generally within a 10-mile radius. Tom Kennedy, Dana’s general sales manager, said that some participants will be taken farther, as long as it’s within the county where the trip originated. Alert Cab offers rides to participants’ homes only — no other locations.

Kennedy said Friday that Alert Cab provided 68 rides on New Year’s Eve 2016. In some years it has provided as many as 100 rides. He said Dana spent about $2,100 on drunken-driving-prevention programs this year, including Alert Cab.

“The bottom line is saving lives,” Kennedy said.

There were 10,497 fatalities from drunken-driving crashes nationwide in 2016, up 1.7 percent from 2015, according to U.S. Department of Transportation statistics.

“There are no excuses. Do not get into a car if you’ve had too much to drink,” Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois said at a news conference Friday at Dana’s headquarters. “Drunken-driving accidents take lives, devastate families and derail careers.”

This is the 32nd year Dana is offering free cab rides home. The program started with New Year’s Eve in 1986, and expanded to other key dates: Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day and Thanksgiving Eve.

Dana hosted representatives from 17 law-enforcement agencies Friday to warn about the dangers of drunken driving. Police put out the word that they will be on the lookout for drunken drivers.

“If we save one life this year, it’s all worth it,” Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said.

DuBois pleaded with the public to give up their keys if they’ve been drinking. “We want the good memories. We don’t want bad memories of people getting hurt or killed in a drunken-driving accident, especially during the holidays,” he said.

Dana Distributors expanding in Goshen

Times Cover Photo Dana Distributors

Original Article Via The Times Herald-Record - Daniel Axelrod

"GOSHEN — One gregarious Boston cop. One Miller Brewing Company leader. A chance meeting outside the former Statler Hotel in downtown Boston in the late ’40s during a beer company convention.

A booming, beaming Officer Fred Dana Sr. didn’t know it, but his wisecracking with then-Miller Beer President Frederick C. Miller would lead to the creation of Dana Distributors Inc., a Hudson Valley beverage distribution powerhouse.

“If you ever want to get into the beer distributor business, let me know,” Miller told Dana, and the seed was planted for a family business that continues to grow.

That’s the family lore from Dana’s son, Fred Jr., now the president and a partner, with nephew Patrick English, in the late Fred Sr.’s Village of Goshen business. Fred Jr. recently unveiled plans for an up-to-$6 million, 55,000-square-foot expansion, including 25 new employees.

The plans call for a 45,000-square-foot addition to the company’s 115,000-square-foot plant at 52 Hatfield Lane, plus another 10,000 square feet for recycling. The expansion is due for completion in the fall. The company recently hired the new workers, making it 105 strong.

Dana Distributors already delivers Anheuser-Busch brands for Orange, Rockland and Sullivan counties. Now, to accommodate its recent acquisition of the distribution rights for Dr. Pepper Snapple Group products, it’s growing the building it erected in 2002.

“Dana has long had a positive effect on the economy for all of Orange County, and the surrounding area,” said state Sen. Bill Larkin, R-C-Cornwall-on-Hudson. “Now, they’re expanding their role in the region.”

Fred Jr. said the company distinguishes itself with caring relationships with customers and community members. It’s known for funding an annual Safe Cab program that transported 161 individuals home from participating restaurants and bars last year on St. Patrick’s Day, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday.

“What makes us successful, and I probably sound like a broken record to our employees because I preach this all the time, is relationships,” Fred, Jr. said. “Our success is based on our people.”

Of course, Dana Distributors wasn’t always so big. Fred Sr., who died two years ago at 92, eventually took Miller up on his offer. The elder Dana put himself through Harvard Business School at night, earning a B.A. while working as a cop, before taking a job with Miller around 1954.

By 1970, Fred Sr. was looking to go solo. So, he followed a friend’s tip to the Hudson Valley, where he bought the former Sweeney Bottling Works building in Middletown, renamed it Dana Distributors and began with perhaps 15 employees.

“They’ve grown to become a key player in the community, and it all goes back to good leadership,” said Town of Goshen Supervisor Douglas Bloomfield. “I’m very proud of them.”
